Richard Wagner avait une opinion sur tout : de la mode à l'atome, en passant par la tragédie grecque, Schiller ou Darwin. Il vénérait Goethe et admirait Balzac, trouvait les vêtements des Allemandes indécents et vantait la nudité grecque. Shakespeare était à ses yeux le plus grand poète allemand et il se voyait lui-même comme le successeur d'Eschyle. Rarement lus, les dix volumes des Oeuvres en prose où Wagner expose ses opinions demeuraient jusqu'à aujourd'hui un domaine inexploré. Christophe Looten en a extrait les pensées du compositeur pour nous les offrir dans une nouvelle traduction. Les cent dix sujets de cette autobiographie intellectuelle sont enrichis de commentaires, de nombreuses citations du Journal de Cosima, ainsi que de passages de lettres inédites en français. Il nous restitue une image fidèle d'un aspect encore méconnu du compositeur : l'homme de culture, le lecteur, le bibliophile, exemple même de l'artiste génial de la fin du XIXe siècle. Ce voyage dans l'esprit d'un des plus grands génies de la musique nous fait entrer dans le monde de Richard Wagner. Guidés par l'un de ses meilleurs connaisseurs, nous allons à la rencontre d'un homme dont la musique exerce toujours une fascination incomparable.
