Comment définir l'identité communautaire à partir d'une histoire comparée du village, soucieuse d'équilibre entre les différents "modèles régionaux"? Au prix d'un effort considérable de réunion des matériaux dispersés dans les archives et l'historiographie, Antoine Follain réussit cette gageure : fournir un éclairage national sur plus de trois siècles - de 1450 à 1780 principalement - en conservant un pied sur un observatoire particulier - la haute Normandie, où le religieux et le civil sont étroitement imbriqués - et en en posant un autre à l'extérieur, dans la diversité des configurations socio-institutionnelles de la vieille France.
