Au fil d'une lecture attentive et renouvelée des écrits laissés par la Faculté et ses maîtres se dessinent les traits marquants de la médecine parisienne aux deux derniers siècles du Moyen Age. Les limites chronologiques sont fournies par deux oeuvres majeures : la Chirurgie d'Henri de Mondeville, commencée en 1306, qui incite à une réévaluation des rapports entre médecins et chirurgiens, trop souvent interprétés selon des critères inadaptés à la période médiévale ; le commentaire de Jacques Despars au Canon d'Avicenne, terminé en 1453, qui, par son ampleur et son originalité, offre un bilan contrasté de la pensée et de la pratique médicales à l'aube des temps humanistes. Sensibles aux demandes de la société et à la diversité des influences, les universitaires parisiens des XIVe et XVe siècles témoignent à la fois des permanences inhérentes à la démarche médicale et des conditions propres à leur époque. Grâce à ce double regard porté sur leurs écrits, la présente étude se rattache autant à l'histoire de la médecine qu'à celle de la civilisation médiévale.
