Pendant cinquante ans, il maintient et accroît cet héritage. Roi Catholique, champion de la Contre-Réforme, il lance à l'assaut du monde ses armées et ses flottes, ne craignant pas de s'attaquer au pape, à la France, à l'Angleterre . Son frère don Juan est victorieux du Turc à Lépante. Le duc d'Albe s'empare du Portugal et Alexandre Farnèse restaure son pouvoir aux Pays-Bas. A ses sujets il impose une loi de fer. L'Inquisition allume ses bûchers. Les morisques sont déportés. Un tribunal de sang est instauré dans les Flandres. La répression s'abat sur l'Aragon. Mais l'heure des revers a sonné. Les éléments déchaînés dispersent l'Invincible Armada, Henri IV chasse à jamais les Espagnols de France. Homme de cabinet, penché nuit et jour sur ses dossiers, Philippe II assume pleinement la responsabilité de sa politique. Jugeant de tout, il n'hésite pas devant des mesures extrêmes, comme l'incarcération de son fils dément, don Carlos. La légende noire s'empare alors de son personnage. Et pourtant la personnalité du roi a bien d'autres facettes. Sa vie privée révèle des aspects attachants. Son humanité s'exprime dans le goût de la nature et l'amour des arts.
