2025 est le 17e centenaire du concile de Nicée, qui a eu lieu en 325. Reconnu par les chrétiens de toutes confessions, c'est le premier concile dit "oecuménique" au sens antique du mot, c'est-à-dire réuni par l'empereur romain Constantin pour l'ensemble de l' "oecumène" , à savoir le monde connu et régi par Rome. Les pères réunis y condamnent l'hérésie d'Arius, proclament le Fils consubstantiel au Père et rédigent le Credo. Cet écrit d'Athanase, qui prend la forme d'une lettre à un ami, constitue un témoignage historique majeur, puisque les actes du concile ne nous sont pas parvenus. Ce texte est une mine documentaire incontournable sur le concile, car Athanase a annexé à sa lettre une série de documents sur la condamnation d'Arius, comprenant la lettre d'Eusèbe de Césarée à son Eglise, rédigée depuis le concile de Nicée en 325, ainsi que les lettres de Constantin et du concile annonçant les décisions prises lors du concile - ces lettres sont bien sûr incluses ici. Si la lettre d'Athanase ne donne pas le texte même des décrets conciliaires, elle renseigne toutefois sur la teneur des décisions de l'assemblée. Le volume reprend l'édition critique des Athanasius Werke II, 1-2 (Hans Georg Opitz, Berlin 1935) et offre, avec une introduction et une bibliographie à jour, une traduction française moderne avec l'annotation nécessaire sur le texte.
