Jérôme est fixé à Bethléem depuis quelques années quand on le sollicite pour réfuter les thèses hérétiques d' un certain Jovinien, qui jettent le trouble dans les milieux romains. Ce moine affirme en particulier l' égalité de tous les chrétiens, indépendamment de leur état de vie - vierges, veufs ou mariés - et de leurs mérites. En quelques mois, au cours de l' année 393, le Stridonien rédige un traité en deux livres, dont le premier, entièrement consacré à montrer la supériorité de la virginité sur le mariage, provoque un scandale à Rome. « L' affaire Jovinien » témoigne des débats autour de l' ascétisme qui agitent les dernières années du iv e siècle. Dans ce traité, Jérôme se montre un redoutable polémiste : du dénigrement de l' adversaire à l' érudition biblique et profane, toutes les armes sont bonnes. « OEuvre la plus brillante et l' une des plus soignées de Jérôme » selon F. Cavallera, le Contre Jovinien apparaît comme un chef-d' oeuvre de virtuosité stratégique, apte à susciter l' intérêt de la critique moderne.
