Exégète, apologiste, historien et théologien, Théodoret, évêque de Cyr (423), fut le dernier grand représentant de l'école d'Antioche. Sa réputation était telle que, en 430, l'évêque d'Antioche lui demanda de réfuter les anathématismes auxquels Cyrille d'Alexandrie sommait Nestorius de souscrire. Il se trouva alors engagé dans le long débat doctrinal qui s'étend du concile d'Ephèse (431) à celui de Chalcédoine (451). Défenseur de la christologie antiochienne des "deux natures" contre Cyrille, il contribua pourtant au rétablissement de la paix entre Alexandrie et Antioche en 433. Toutefois, dès 447, Théodoret reprit la lutte, cette fois contre le monophysisme radical professé par le moine Eutychès à Constantinople. Cela lui valut d'être condamné et déposé par le concile d'Éphèse de 449. Il dut attendre le concile de Chalcédoine pour voir son orthodoxie reconnue. Ce second volume, qui rassemble dix-neuf études, étudie plus particulièrement l'oeuvre théologique, surtout christologique, de Théodoret, notamment dans ses dimensions apologétiques et polémiques.
