Cette introduction est une somme qui englobe toute la littérature chrétienne des IIe et IIIe siècles, de quelque provenance que ce soit, y compris gnostique ou apocryphe. Elle s'inscrit dans une vision de la théologie de l'histoire et adopte donc un plan correspondant aux étapes du plan divin de salut, depuis le Dieu inconnu et son entreprise créatrice jusqu'à l'accomplissement final du cosmos et de l'humanité, en passant par l'action de l'Esprit dans le temps et l'incarnation du Verbe en Jésus. L'enjeu est cosmique, mais surtout anthropologique : il s'agit de comprendre quel salut est apporté par quel Sauveur. A chaque étape, les auteurs chrétiens, qu'ils soient gnostiques ou "orthodoxes", sont mis en relation et inaugurent sous les yeux du lecteur une discussion féconde qui éclaire les passages scripturaires, objets de cette confrontation. Il en résulte une vision d'ensemble à la fois simple et riche, qui renouvelle en grande partie la représentation reçue du christianisme primitif et de son rapport au texte biblique. Les versets de l'Ecriture ainsi commentés apparaissent sous un jour inédit, représentatif de leur toute première réception dans les communautés chrétiennes. Se dessine alors un christianisme pluriel, traversé de tensions, mais non éclaté, car partageant les mêmes problématiques.
