Avec cet ouvrage se poursuit la publication du "Commentaire sur l'Epître aux Romains" d'Origène, composé à Césarée vers 243, et traduit par Rufin d'Aquilée dans les années 405-406. Après les livres I et II (SC 532), le présent volume donne accès aux livres III, IV et V, qui expliquent la section allant de Rm 3, 5 à Rm 6, 10. Origène se montre soucieux de suivre pas à pas le texte de l'épître, n'éludant aucune difficulté de ce texte, s'efforçant au contraire d'en éclairer les passages les plus difficiles - et cela sans se départir d'un profond respect pour les mystères dont Paul se fait l'interprète, tel le serviteur prudent à qui ont été dévoilées les chambres secrètes d'un palais. L'explication du texte paulinien le conduit à développer sa pensée sur des thèmes aussi fondamentaux que la loi, le péché, la justification, la foi, les oeuvres ou le baptême. La crise pélagienne devait plus tard conduire à une intense réflexion sur ces thèmes majeurs. Il est d'autant plus précieux de découvrir l'interprétation qui en avait été donnée par l'Alexandrin en son propre temps et qui prenait une nouvelle actualité à l'époque où Rufin traduisait cette oeuvre en latin. Origène est particulièrement attentif aux différents sens du mot "loi" dans le texte de l'épître. De plus, même s'il donne toute leur place aux questions du péché et de la justification, il est conscient de ce qu'elles prennent sens dans la perspective globale de l'écrit paulinien - celle d'une réflexion sur la destinée d'Israël et des nations. Par là même, le "Commentaire" ne témoigne pas seulement d'une réelle originalité dans l'histoire de la tradition, mais surtout d'une attention très juste au dessein de Paul dans l'ensemble de l'épître.
