Saint Maxime le Confesseur (580-662) apparaît aujourd'hui comme l'un des plus grands théologiens byzantins. Dans son œuvre, les acquis patristiques antérieurs se trouvent rassemblés et intégrés en une synthèse puissante et géniale. La doctrine des deux volontés et des deux énergies du Christ, qu'il confessa jusque dans le martyre, fut officiellement adoptée par l'Eglise lors du VIe concile œcuménique (Constantinople III). Mais Maxime a aussi été qualifié de " docteur de la divinisation ". Ce thème, qui occupe une place centrale dans la spiritualité de l'Orient chrétien, trouve, en effet, dans l'œuvre du Confesseur l'une de ses expressions les plus fortes et les plus achevées et contribue pour une grande part à définir la nature et les relations de sa théologie, de sa cosmologie, de son anthropologie, de son ascétique et de sa mystique. Cette étude approfondie et nourrie de nombreuses citations, la plus vaste qui ait été consacrée jusqu'à ce jour à cet auteur, nous ouvre donc l'accès à une compréhension de la pensée de Maxime dans son ensemble, en même temps qu'elle nous introduit au cœur de la christologie et de la mystique orthodoxes.
