De tous les théologiens musulmans d'époque classique, al-Ash'ari (m.935 A.D.) a été, sans nul doute, le plus important Or, paradoxalement, sa doctrine restait encore très mal connue, du fait que fort peu de ses écrits se sont conservés. A partir, notamment, d'une source jusqu'ici inexploitée - un exposé complet de ses thèses par un de ses premiers grands disciples -, voici enfin présenté dans toute son ampleur le "système" d'al-Ash'ari. Système original, mais aussi, surtout, exemplaire. On verra là comment, il y a plus de dix siècles, un théologien de l'Islam pouvait se représenter le monde, Dieu, et la destinée humaine.
