Véritable joyau de la cartographie de la Renaissance, la Cosmographie universelle de Guillaume Le Testu a été dessinée et peinte en 1556 pour l'amiral de France Gaspard de Coligny. Son auteur, pilote royal au Havre, prit part à l'expédition de Villegagnon au Brésil et fut le compagnon d'aventures du fameux corsaire Francis Drake. Riche de cinquante-six cartes enluminées, la Cosmographie universelle décrit la totalité du monde connu, en ajoutant aux terres nouvellement découvertes, comme les Amériques ou l'Extrême-Orient, des territoires représentés "par imagination". Telle l'hypothétique Terre Australe, déployée en douze cartes, et reliant Java à la Terre de Feu. En ces lointains parages résident bêtes fabuleuses et peuples monstrueux, licornes et griffons faisant bon ménage avec les pygmées. les géants, les amazones et les cyclopes. Cette oeuvre totale et foisonnante, jusqu'à présent inédite, conjugue à la cosmographie mathématique héritée de Ptolémée l'héritage des merveilles venues du Moyen Age et la cartographie nautique des cartes-portulans. Les conquêtes d'Alexandre le Grand en Asie s'y prolongent dans les voyages de Marco Polo et les plus récentes navigations des Portugais. Les voyages de Jacques Cartier y inscrivent leur trace dans une Amérique tout juste sortie des limbes. Un ample essai introductif replace l'atlas de Le Testu dans le contexte historique des grandes découvertes et de la lutte pour l'empire des mers. C'est l'occasion pour Frank Lestringant, professeur à la Sorbonne et le meilleur spécialiste aujourd'hui de la littérature géographique du XVIe siècle, d'éclairer les enjeux tout à la fois scientifiques, politiques et esthétiques d'une oeuvre entre toutes fascinante par son alliance intime d'archaïsme et de nouveauté, de rusticité apparente et de raffinement, représentative, dans sa magnificence et sa complexité. de la culture de la Renaissance à son apogée.
