En France, la découverte de Schopenhauer (1788-1860) au tournant des années 1880 provoque une fièvre qui excède les débats philosophiques habituels. Maupassant choisit pour guide ce professeur de pessimisme et de noirceur. Il hante certains personnages de Huysmans, résignés à admettre avec lui que la vie de l'homme oscille entre la douleur et l'ennui. On est sommé de se positionner par rapport à Schopenhauer, parce que sa philosophie engage radicalement le sens de l'existence. Le Monde comme volonté et représentation est le "grand livre" de son auteur. Celui-ci y ferraille avec les idées de Platon et de Kant, tout en prenant au sérieux l'apport récent des orientalistes et en tirant des implications considérables des Upanishad. Mais ce livre polyglotte commente aussi Cervantès, Shakespeare, Calderón, La Rochefoucauld, Swift, Voltaire, Chamfort, Byron, Goethe ou Leopardi. Il donne corps à une pensée dont on sent bien qu'elle n'avait jamais été formulée jusqu'ici et qu'elle n'est pas de celles que l'on dépasse. Selon Nietzsche, il n'y a chez Schopenhauer ni affectation ni rhétorique : c'est un "discours droit, rude et bienveillant", porté par un "naturel inimitable" et "une vigoureuse aisance". La présente traduction relève le défi de rendre la puissance de la langue de Schopenhauer, qui fascina Kafka et Borges, tout en respectant l'unité de son vocabulaire philosophique.
