Yves Peyré, écrivain et ami de Francis Bacon (1909-1992), consacre à l'oeuvre et au destin de l'artiste un ouvrage particulièrement complet tant en terme d'analyse que de reproduction des peintures et des dessins. II y évoque l'apport majeur de ce grand peintre inclassable, de ses débuts de jeune designer dans les années 1920 jusqu'à ses derniers grands triptyques de la fin des années 1980, et offre un regard personnel et touchant sur sa personnalité complexe et sur son oeuvre hors mesure. Une oeuvre tourmentée, parfois violente, reflet de ses plus intimes blessures, mais néanmoins lumineuse par ses couleurs et par sa quête d'absolu. Le propos, toujours fondé sur des faits précis, élargit considérablement la vision de l'oeuvre par des interprétations fouillées. Cet ensemble constitue un apport indéniablement nouveau. Le livre s'appuie sur une connaissance sans faille de l'oeuvre et s'enrichit de la proximité de l'auteur avec Francis Bacon lui-même, proposant une déambulation philosophique, poétique et artistique dans les diverses étapes d'une exploration qui tranche à tous égards.
