Le stratagème réussit, les amants s'enlacent. Quand ils sont de nouveau séparés, Tristan compose un lai pour éterniser cet instant de bonheur. Telle est l'origine du Chèvrefeuille de Marie de France, et celle de bien des lais : ils naissent du souvenir d'une émotion. De Marie de France on sait peu de chose. Elle vécut dans la seconde moitié du XIIe siècle, était liée à la cour d'Aliénor d'Aquitaine, et fut la première femme poète à écrire en langue vernaculaire. Son oeuvre illustre un courant littéraire alors en plein essor, le "lai narratif", qui est en fait un récit, un conte. La floraison du genre correspond à l'apogée des Plantagenêt ; le lai participe à leur rayonnement. Le déclin des lais narratifs coïncidera avec les difficultés politiques de la dynastie. Le monde des lais est celui du merveilleux, la féerie y surgit à l'improviste. Les chevaux galopent plus vite que ne volent les oiseaux, tel homme se transforme trois jours par semaine en une bête féerique, tel autre épouse le reflet de sa bien-aimée. La fine amor, c'est-à-dire l'amour courtois, est partout présente. Revêtant des formes diverses - féeriques, didactiques, burlesques, proches des fabliaux, voire des fables -, les lais ont en commun le sens de l'image, la musique de la rime, l'art de suggérer, le don d'émouvoir. Cette édition, où une traduction en français moderne figure en regard du texte anglo-normand, réunit tous les lais narratifs des XIIe et XIIIe siècles. Ceux dont le texte a été perdu sont représentés par la traduction de leur version norroise ou moyen-anglaise.
