Après les Trois Glorieuses, auxquelles il assiste avec joie, Stendhal est nommé consul à Civitavecchia, poste subalterne s'il en est. Des "parchemins poudreux" de la bibliothèque de la duchesse de Sermoneta il tire des "chroniques italiennes" (mais ne publiera jamais aucun recueil de ce titre). Et, entre 1834 et 1836, il radiographie à distance la France du "plus fripon des Kings", Louis-Philippe I ?? . Il révèle les rouages intimes de sa machine sans âme, peint son personnel corrompu, ses opposants dérisoires. Roman de la boue contemporaine et de la médiocratie désormais aux affaires, Lucien Leuwen - qui est aussi l'histoire d'un jeune homme de qualité en quête de sens et de valeur, c'est-à-dire d'amour - restera dans les tiroirs de M. le consul ; le livre était évidemment impubliable sous la monarchie de Juillet. Treize ans après la mort de Stendhal paraît une version retouchée et limitée aux dix-huit premiers chapitres, Le Chasseur vert. Par la suite, on prendra l'habitude de compléter le texte de cette publication partielle par celui du manuscrit autographe. La présente édition est à la première à revenir systématiquement à la source de l'écriture. Elle propose l'intégralité du texte autographe et permet de prendre connaissance, en bas de page, des remarques portées dans la marge par l'écrivain. Ces "marginales", parfois intimes (emploi du temps, humeur, état de santé du consul), renseignent surtout sur la méthode de travail du romancier. A la suite du manuscrit, on trouvera la version "historique" du Chasseur vert, ainsi que des appendices regroupant ébauches, plans, "pilotis", épisodes supprimés, etc.
