Dans ses romans parus peu avant ou peu après l'attribution du prix Nobel de littérature (1950), Faulkner fait entendre une voix nouvelle, moins intime, plus politique. A partir du meurtre supposé d'un Blanc par un Noir, L'Intrus dans la poussière (1948) explore les rapports entre les races. Récit policier dont l'énigme est résolue par l'accusé lui-même, aidé du jeune neveu de l'avocat Gavin Stevens, c'est aussi le roman d'apprentissage de cet adolescent. Gavin Stevens va s'installer chez Faulkner ; c'est lui qui mène les six enquêtes du Gambit du cavalier (1949), lui encore qui, dans Requiem pour une nonne (1951), confronte Temple Drake, l'héroïne de Sanctuaire, à Nancy Mannigoe, la nurse noire qui a tué son enfant. Une fois de plus, avec Requiem, Faulkner innove : les dialogues dramatiques alternent avec des prologues narratifs qui forment la chronique sans concession de la ville de Jefferson et, à travers elle, celle d'une Amérique pionnière, avide et violente. Puis vient Parabole (1954), que Faulkner tenait pour son magnum opus. Non pas livre de guerre mais livre sur la guerre, cette fresque foisonnante (et méconnue) fait parfois songer au cinéma de Griffith ou d'Eisenstein. Bien que l'action se situe dans la France de 1918, il ne s'agit pas d'un roman historique : avec une ironie stridente ou loufoque, Parabole traduit les tensions et les peurs des débuts de la guerre froide. Faulkner y insistait : ce n'est pas un livre pacifiste, mais la "tentative de montrer l'homme, les êtres humains, en conflit avec leur propre coeur, leurs pulsions et leurs croyances, et avec la terre, cette scène dure et durable et insensible où doivent s'accomplir les tourments de leurs peines et de leurs espérances". Ce tome IV contient L'Intrus dans la poussière, Le Gambit du cavalier, Requiem pour une nonne, Parabole et, en appendice, Discours du prix Nobel, la première version du Gambit du cavalier, Note sur Parabole, etc.
