On tient Waverley (1814) pour le premier roman historique. C'est aussi le premier roman de Walter Scott, et un coup de maître. D'emblée, Scott trouve sa manière ; il ne se perd pas dans le détail des événements - de la bataille de Culloden (1746) il ne montre qu'une escarmouche -, mais s'intéresse aux mours, aux mentalités, aux hommes et aux communautés. Edward Waverley, jeune Anglais qui rejoint le parti Stuart en rébellion contre la dynastie hanovrienne découvre en même temps que le lecteur les Highlands, la vie des clans, le charme orageux des âmes et des paysages. Comme le lecteur, il est séduit. Comme lui, il rêve ce rêve collectif qu'est l'histoire de l'Écosse au XVIIIe siècle. Rêve tragique, folle aventure d'une nation en quête de son intégrité perdue. Le Nain noir (1816), dont l'héroïne persécutée semble sortir d'un roman gothique, se situe après un désastre national, l'Acte d'union entre l'Écosse et l'Angleterre (1707) ; si l'héroïne échappe (grâce au Nain) à un sort peu enviable, les complots jacobites avortent. Le Cour de Mid-Lothian (1818) mêle l'histoire de Jeanie Deans - paysanne simple et sublime qui pour sauver sa sour condamnée à mort fait à pied le voyage de Londres - aux troubles de 1736, qui voient les émeutiers écossais exécuter leur compatriote Porteous, que la reine d'Angleterre avait gracié. Ces romans n'ont pourtant rien de textes militants. L'Écosse des Stuart est une cause perdue, et Scott le sait. Perdue pour l'Histoire, non pour la littérature. Les vaincus de Culloden sont d'inoubliables figures romanesques.
