Comme l'opéra occidental, le théâtre de l'Inde ancienne est un spectacle total. Il associe tous les arts de la scène. Présence conjuguée de la danse, de la musique et de la poésie ; alternance de la prose et des vers ; alternance des langues aussi : le sanskrit, réservé aux hommes de haut rang, cohabite avec les prâkrits, langues assignées aux hommes de condition inférieure et aux femmes, reines ou déesses. L'intrigue emprunte à trois sources principales : l'épopée - Mahabharata et Ramayana -, les contes, l'histoire. Ici, ni comédie ni tragédie ; c'est l'émotion esthétique, l'émerveillement, qui prime. Ce théâtre se lit comme un poème. Quant à la règle des trois unités, elle n'a pas cours : l'action, multiple, se situe rarement dans un lieu unique, et certaines pièces se déroulent sur vingt années, ou plus. Quant aux représentations, elles peuvent durer plusieurs jours (et plusieurs nuits). Cette étrangeté a enflammé l'Occident. En 1789, William Jones donne la première traduction anglaise d'une pièce indienne, Sakuntala. L'engouement est immédiat. Goethe est envoûté par la jeune héroïne : « Faut-il nommer les fleurs du printemps avec les fruits de l'automne, le charme qui enivre avec l'aliment qui rassasie, le ciel avec la terre ? C'est ton nom que je prononce, ô Sacontala, et ce seul mot dit tout. » C'est le début de la « Renaissance orientale ». La vague d'enthousiasme ne retombera pas : de Schlegel à Apollinaire, en passant par Théophile Gauthier, Gustave Flaubert ou Camille Claudel, tous reconnaissent en Sakuntala l'héroïne romantique par excellence. Désormais, la découverte de l'Inde se confond avec celle de son théâtre, c'est-à-dire avec le genre que les Indiens considèrent comme la forme la plus achevée de leur littérature.
