En France, tout commence par des chansons. Le lyrisme courtois naît vers la fin du XIe siècle, dans le Sud. Bientôt, il se propage au nord de la Loire. En ce temps-là, l'amor (le mot est du féminin) est fine, c'est-à-dire raffinée. Elle exige de ceux qui la chantent qu'ils se forgent des instruments, une langue, des formes, à la hauteur de leur sujet. Ces premiers chercheurs d'une excellence poétique sont, non sans logique, appelés des "trouveurs" trobadors dans le Sud, troveors ("trouvères") dans le Nord. C'est avec eux que s'ouvre cette anthologie. Elle se referme, au second volume, avec des poètes vivants, nos contemporains. Bien sûr, leurs voix ne sont pas éteintes, leurs oeuvres ne sont pas achevées. Mais déjà se dessine un paysage, dont on trouvera ici les contours. Rappelons que le verbe grec anthologein signifie "cueillir des fleurs". Cueillir, sauf à tondre la prairie, c'est choisir. Ces deux volumes, tout en proposant un panorama aussi équilibré que possible de neuf siècles de poésie, n'échappent pas à cette règle. L'important est sans doute que le lecteur demeure le maître du jeu, qu'il se sente libre de fixer le but de sa promenade, de régler le rythme de son pas, d'emprunter tantôt les allées principales, tantôt les chemins de traverse. Autant de lecteurs, autant d'anthologies.
