Les médiévistes le nomment Lancelot-Graal. Il en existe de multiples adaptations, plus ou moins édulcorées et que l'on appelle généralement Romans de la Table ronde. Mais il s'agit en réalité de l'ouvre capitale du XIIIe siècle, et de l'un des plus grands textes de la littérature française. De ce roman fleuve, composé en prose, chacun connaît les héros, les objets, les décors, les principales aventures : Merlin, Arthur, Guenièvre, Viviane, Lancelot, Perceval, Galaad, le saint Graal bien sûr, la Lance qui saigne, l'épée Excalibur, la Table ronde, le château de la Douloureuse Garde, le Val sans Retour... Reste à découvrir sous son jour véritable une ouvre, c'est-à-dire un texte, dont voici une édition bilingue (ancien français/français moderne) fondée sur un manuscrit inédit. À la fois axe principal et enjeu premier du récit, le Graal n'est pas la résurgence médiévale d'un arsenal de vieilles croyances ésotériques ; c'est le mythe, l'aura fabuleuse fabriquée par la littérature elle-même autour d'un mot étrange qui la fit rêver, et dont l'attrait ne faiblit pas.
