Jane Austen est aujourd'hui célèbre, en France comme ailleurs - même si, en France, on lit souvent ses ouvres dans des versions qui sont des adaptations plutôt que des traductions. Face aux débordements sentimentaux des romans qu'affectionne son époque (et auxquels on assimile un peu trop légèrement les siens), elle se veut l'écrivain de la raison et cherche à prémunir le lecteur contre les errements d'un cour livré à la seule pente de l'égoïsme. À ses portraits nuancés, elle ne donne pas pour fond les paysages tourmentés de romans gothiques (tournés en dérision dans L'Abbaye de Northanger), mais ceux, apparemment plus paisibles, d'une campagne anglaise qu'elle connaît de l'intérieur et dont elle révèle l'arrière-scène : ce monde de la bonne société rurale, où les jeunes filles doivent apprendre à diriger leurs sentiments pour atteindre au bonheur rêvé. Le choix d'un prétendant, les étapes menant au mariage forment l'intrigue principale de ses romans : l'occasion pour son regard aiguisé de mettre au jour bien des vérités - dans une langue d'une extraordinaire précision, que la présente traduction s'efforce de respecter dans tous ses détails.
