Le premier tome voudrait révéler l'ouvre dans son évolution et la rendre à sa cohérence. Il contient trente-quatre récits, nouvelles, romans ou pièces de théâtre, composés de 1910 à 1936 ; seize de ces textes étaient inédits en français. Jamais sans doute on n'aura mieux perçu que dans ce livre la tension entre la modernité souvent conventionnelle que son occidentalisation rapide a laissée en héritage au Japon, et une tradition vidée de son contenu, vestige d'un raffinement devenu sans objet. C'est dans cette tension que s'inscrit la thématique privilégiée de l'ouvre : les relations entre hommes et femmes, ou, pour le dire autrement, la relation que la chair entretient avec l'idéal. Le second tome contient notamment Bruine de neige (Quatre sours), qui fut écrit pendant la guerre. C'est un livre serein. Les pétales de fleurs de cerisier tombent en virevoltant ; on savoure le doux sentiment de regret provoqué par l'impermanence de la beauté. Tanizaki, serein ? L'âge, pourtant, ne guérit pas toutes les passions. Plus que jamais dominante, la femme se trouve face à un homme dont la virilité défaille - drame personnel qui rejoint la tragédie collective quand l'impuissance du héros est due à l'irradiation subie à Hiroshima (Chronique inhumaine) ; Tokusuke à bout de forces (Journal d'un vieux fou) est tenu en haleine par le désir que lui inspire sa belle-fille. Mais il sait, tous savent, Tanizaki le premier, que la vie doit finir. Alors, de la conscience claire de ce qu'est la condition humaine, s'élève une lumière salutaire - comme une jubilation.
