L'humeur d'un cheval donne le branle à l'une des ouvres les plus originales de son temps. Que relate Brantôme ? ce qu'il connaît : les vies des dames, qui font l'objet de ce volume, et celle des grands capitaines. Étrange entreprise, de glorification et tout à la fois de démythification. Dans son Recueil des Dames, dont les deux livres, ici publiés, sont connus sous les titres de Dames illustres et de Dames galantes, Brantôme clame la supériorité du monde qui est le sien mais, aussi, il en fait tomber le masque. Tout le paradoxe des Dames gît en cela : autour de larges thèmes où l'amour (entendre : l'érotisme) tient la plus grande place, des chapelets d'anecdotes révèlent les vérités cachées sans que jamais la cour perde son prestige de « vrai paradis du monde ». Dépourvu des préjugés de son temps - notamment en matière de religion -, il trace le portrait le plus vivant et le plus contrasté qui ait été fait du XVIe siècle.
