Ce vers, qui figure, selon une variante, dans le prologue du premier récit, montre bien que, pour Cao Xueqin (1715 ? -1763), Le Rêve dans le pavillon rouge est inséparable de sa personnalité et de son existence. Il définit son oeuvre comme le résultat, "hors du commun, de dix années de labeur" . Si, au dire de ses contemporains, Cao Xueqin était un génie multiforme, romancier, poète, peintre, calligraphe, joueur de cithare, chanteur et même acteur amateur, c'est à son roman que son nom doit de figurer parmi les plus illustres. Ecrit en pur dialecte de Pékin, Le Rêve dans le pavillon rouge, animé par ses quatre cent quarante-huit personnages parfaitement individualisés, avec ses multiples intrigues, trace une vaste fresque de la société chinoise au XVIII ? siècle. Le livre a pour thème central la décadence de la classe dirigeante et l'impossibilité pour elle de trouver des successeurs capables de faire face à la situation. Cette satire sociale est habilement dissimulée dans la trame du roman, qui dépeint la vie d'une famille aristocratique à son déclin, situation qu'a bien connue l'auteur.
