Dans Les Frères Karamazov, Dostoïevski a donné le résumé de sa carrière et de sa pensée. On y retrouve l'opposition père et fils de L'Adolescent, le duel de l'athéisme et de la sainteté des Possédés, le schéma de L'Idiot, avec le crime à la base et l'entrevue dramatique des deux rivales ; enfin et surtout l'un des frères, Aliocha, est la reprise du prince Mychkine : il s'appelait "l'Idiot" dans Ies brouillons. Il semble même que Dostoïevski ait voulu exprimer dans les trois frères les trois aspects de sa personnalité ou les trois étapes de sa vie : Dimitri le schillérien rappelle sa période romantique, terminée aussi par le bagne ; Ivan, les années où il était près de remplacer la foi chrétienne par le socialisme athée ; Aliocha, son aboutissement, le retour au peuple russe et à l'orthodoxie. Sous quelque angle qu'on les considère, Les Frères Karamazov sont un microcosme aux richesses inépuisables, le chef-d'oeuvre peut-être de Dostoïevski.
