Before and during the First World War, the Inspektion der Fliegertruppen (Idflieg) was the central procurement office for the complete equipment and personnel of all German air units of the army and, to some extent, the navy. This book describes the emergence of Idflieg and its organization before the outbreak of war as well as the gigantic development during the war years 1914 to 1918. The book clearly shows the effort that had to be made to supply the fighting units on the fronts with aircraft, consumables, and other equipment, and also with pilots and observers trained for war. To this end, supply units had to be set up to bring all the material from industry to the combat units. Equally important was the supply of the hinterland, as the initial training of the crews took place at home, where almost as many aircraft were needed as on the fronts. But Idflieg's job was also to steer technical progress by reformulating the ever-changing requirements for aircraft, their equipment, and their armament. New operational measures in the use of the young weapon of war, which had been difficult to develop in Germany during the five years of peace prior to the outbreak of war, were a constant challenge for the engineers and designers in the factories at home. Thanks to the existing mobilization plans for the Luftwaffe, there were only brief supply problems at first. Constant improvements in the organization of the Idflieg ensured that the combat units were kept well supplied, even in times of increasingly scarce resources. Of special interest to historians, the complete list of aircraft orders (army and navy) is part of the book as well as a list of all air force units. The book has more than 630 illustrations in its 369 pages.
