Teacher Manual for Habakkuk’s Pre-K and Kindergarten Curriculum

The curriculum of Habakkuk Educational Materials was specially designed to simplify learning and help students to learn more in less time. While some of the materials are sold separately, this manual for preschool and kindergarten students provides a detailed class schedule and many supplemental materials for implementing the program. Students of teachers who follow the class schedule on pages 11-18 will learn how to recognize and write their own names; name the alphabet letters in sequence; match upper- and lower-case letters; recognize and write all 26 alphabet letters (capital and lower-case); identify the sounds made by the letters; distinguish between vowels and consonants and long and short vowel sounds; recognize at least 38 sight words; recognize and write numbers 0-10 and be able to count at least to 20 (although very likely all the way up to 100); count by tens to 100; and to recognize various shapes and colors. Students will also learn about rhymes, word families, syllabication, weather and seasons, and various science and social studies themes will be explored throughout the school year. In addition, many students as young as pre-K will be able to sound out and spell simple vc or cvc words (such as at, cat, mom) within 3-4 months of instruction, and time has been allowed for this on the class schedule. Besides the phonics instruction provided for both pre-k and kindergarten students to help them learn the sounds made by the 26 alphabet letters, time has also been allotted for advanced phonics instruction for kindergarten students (and any pre-K child who is ready). These children will gradually learn and practice spelling and sounding out words with hard and soft c and g, consonant blends, consonant digraphs and trigraphs, short and long vowels, vowel digraphs, diphthongs, r-controlled vowels, and many other letters and letter combinations that make a distinct sound. They will also practice reading aloud simple sentences and writing their own sentences. In addition, time is also available to provide advanced math instruction for kindergarten students. With the 70 Times 7 Math curriculum, they will learn about odd and even numbers, cardinal and ordinal numbers, roman numerals, addition and subtraction, place value, money, time, fractions and percent, problem solving and logical reasoning, patterns, greater- and less-than numbers, rounding, graphing, geometry, measurement, and more. (Corresponding homework and test books can be purchased for individual practice and assessment, and computer-based reviews and tests are also available.) The design of both the reading and math curriculum offered by Habakkuk Educational Materials offers an organized and time-efficient way of introducing new material and of reviewing what has already been learned. Finally, thematic lessons have been provided, as well as various reproducible materials, including worksheets, materials for centers and whole-group activities, resources for preparing a birthday bulletin board, resources for implementing the classroom management plan, and testing materials to help teachers keep track of their students’ progress in math and reading.
