1787年,剛剛獨立不久的美國十三州代表聚集在費城舉行制憲會議在此之前,人類社會從未出現過成文憲法因此制憲既是在制定未來美國政治的框架和所需遵循的最高原則,也是在開創一個先例,即人類憑藉理性和善意協商出解決未來利益紛爭的原則,並永為定例儘管願望是美好的,但具體操作時,各方卻多次因利益衝突而令會議陷入僵局當然最簡單的做法就是拂袖而去,各州繼續各自爲政,形成鬆散邦聯,如此就不會有今天的美國和美國的憲法了正當大家感到氣憤和絕望時,本傑明·富蘭克林站了起來,向會議主席華盛頓將軍講了這樣一番話:"主席先生,我建議在我們休會之前提名和任命一位牧師,其職責是在我們每天開會之前,帶領我們向創世主禱告,因爲他是天下萬國的王我們懇請他來主持我們的會議,用天賜的智慧來啓迪我們,讓我們的心中充滿對真理和正義的愛,並保佑我們最後的成功 " 按照後來的衆議院議長戴頓將軍的回憶,富蘭克林的這番話讓華盛頓將軍及幾乎所有代表悚然動容,他們用欽佩的表情和沉默表達贊許會議由是得以進行,並最終通過了憲法雖然憲法通過了,但美國能否維持在憲法之下的憲政,則是另外一個問題國父亞當斯說"我們的憲法是爲了有信仰和有道德的人制定的如果人們失去信仰和道德,憲法將淪爲一紙空文 " 回顧這段歷史,乃是爲了説明,人類如果要創造文明,依靠個體的力量顯然是做不到的,而人類大面積的分工協作就涉及到社會的組織和管理,而道德敗壞的人既無法自我管理,也不會與他人協作,因此文明只能靠有道德的人來創造歷史上,當一個社會的道德敗壞時,我們看到的就是天災人禍國家解體朝代更迭,乃至文明的沒落和消亡反過來講,如果中華文明能夠延續五千年,那麽其背後必然有一股强大的維繫道德的力量因此,我絕不同意"中華沒有文明"或"中國歷史一團漆黑"的偏見持有這種偏見的人也常常不會意識到,這是共產黨有意誤導的結果事實上,信仰塑造了文明就像我們無法否認天主教對歐洲文明的塑造,和基督教新教對美國文明的塑造一樣,我們也無法否認儒釋道對中華文明的塑造因此在討論中華文明史時,本書用大量的篇幅探討了儒釋道信仰體系的精髓,包括對一些常見誤解的辨析時至今日,過去的信仰在各國都走向了衰落,人們傾向於用科學解決人和自然的關係,用法律解決人和人的關係,本質上來説這是啓蒙運動的余殃,也就是人對自身理性的信仰,認爲人可以憑著自身的理性解決一切問題,乃至發現宇宙的真理生命的奧秘征服自然甚至長生不老這時文明的發展已經走上了歧途人固然應當具備和弘揚理性,但必須是在信仰框架之下的理性人需要保持對神的謙卑,需要維繫神給人規定的道德當對神的信仰缺位時,文明必然行之不遠,社會的亂象也將接踵而至事實上,我們已經看到其惡果正在顯現和蔓延因此這本書除了想探討中華文明的精髓和延續五千年的真正原因,另一個目的也是想藉著這些探討,找到在中共毀滅性地破壞中華文化之後,我們去復興中華文明的著力點
