Description

This is the first scholarly book about the Persian/Iranian nineteenth century poet laureate (Malek al-Sho'ara), painter, sculpture, and calligrapher, Mahmoud Khan (1813-1893 CE), the grandson of the poet laureate Fath-Ali Khan Saba (c.1765-1822/1823 CE), the author of the Shahanshah-nameh (Book of the King of Kings). Based on a multidisciplinary approach, and written in a concise and clear language, this book would be accessible to both academics and general public. Using the life and works of this outstanding person as a reference point, the book would cover the literature, politics, economics, diplomacy and culture of the period in order to highlight those factors that have had a lasting impact on Iran as well as on the global conduct of politics, diplomacy and cultural outlook. The book explores the intersection of poetry, visual art, and court culture, including how philosophical and mystical ideas such as light metaphysics, theophany, and royal iconography influenced artistic production in the period. In addition to the poems and paintings of Mahmoud Khan, the poetic and pictorial styles exemplified in the book of poems by Fath-Ali Shah Qajar (r. 1797-1834 CE), Fath-Ali Khan Saba, and other poets, painters, and artists of the period would be employed for illustrative and analytical purposes. Although primarily an historian and political scientist, Elahe Mohtasham engages deeply in this book with the works of major Persian, Islamic, and Arab historians, scientists and philosophers, including Ibn al-Muqaffa (d. c. 756/759 CE), al-Kindi (c. 801–873 CE), Avicenna (Ibn Sina, c. 980–1037 CE), al-Ghazali (c. 1058–1111 CE), Suhrawardi (1154–1191 CE), Ibn Arabi (1165–1240 CE), and Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406 CE), as well as the transmission of Akbarian and Sadrian ideas into literature and art. She explores how concepts such as tajalli (theophany) and luminous imagery were poetically and visually expressed, revealing their function in linking moral counsel to panegyric iconography. The book demonstrates how ethical and political traditions rooted in Zoroastrianism, Sassanian and Persian sources, transmitted through Ibn al-Muqaffa and later philosophers, furnished enduring models of just rulership and courtly ethics. Drawing on poetry, painting, and the visual arts, these ideas served both to legitimise authority and to offer guidance to rulers, continuing the ancient and medieval genre of 'mirrors for princes.' This broad tradition of moral storytelling provided a model for illustrated manuscripts and courtly visual culture. The dual role of Mahmud Khan as poet laureate and painter in the second half of the nineteenth century exemplifies the integration of literary ethics with visual representation. Mohtasham challenges established analyses that view the primacy function of Qajar era art as a tool for propaganda or for legitimising the monarch’s absolute and authoritarian rule. While acknowledging the importance of internal legitimacy, particularly amid external threats, she argues that philosophical concepts such as light and mirrors, deployed in metaphorical rather than explicit forms and drawing on the Illuminationist tradition (Hikmat al-Ishraq) exemplified by Suhrawardi (with roots in Avicenna’s thought), served a deeper purpose: to instill hope and spiritual comfort in the population during periods of strife, war, invasion, and famine. This would especially apply to the discussion of Mahmoud Khan’s poetry and paintings, where luminous imagery and theophanic motifs blend courtly praise with mystical consolation. These imageries and concepts have continued to shape the work of philosophers, poets, and artists across other regions of the world. Mohtasham’s scholarship bridges political and security analysis of modern Iran with the cultural and historical study of its literary and artistic traditions. Throughout the book, particular attention is given to the historiography of the period, with the themes developed in response to significant gaps in the existing literature.
