These twenty-two papers are the product of a conference that was organised by the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology and the Association for Industrial Archaeology and held in Bristol in 1999. The papers examine the archaeological evidence for industry, the processes of manufacturing and the effect of manufactured goods on society. The case studies and syntheses include examples from mainland Europe but the vast majority focus on Britain including Manchester, Sheffield, Cornwall, the Penines, Swansea, Bristol and Staffordshire, reflecting Britain's unrivalled contribution to industrialisation.
