The names of 150,000 academic staff and officials are given. Every important library is included, giving the number of volumes held and outstanding features of the collection. Professors at major universities are listed by name, together with the subjects they teach. The key academic staff and officials are listed under their institutions by name and faculty. All entries detail name, address, telephone, telex and fax numbers, principal personnel, aims and publications of the organization in question. There are details for more than 400 major international educational, scientific and cultural organizations from around the world. Major bodies such as UNESCO, the International Council of Scientific Unions and the International Association of Universities are outlined in detail. New chapters feature the countries formed since the dissolution of the USSR, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. The book is annually revised to ensure that the many new appointments and changes of address and personnel are included. It is useful as the basis for an international academic mailing list. Complete lists of fellows of the major learned societies, such as the Royal Society, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the American National Academy of Sciences are included. The three-column layout and four-column index pin-point every institution and make the book easy to consult. Educational institutions and learned bodies are arranged alphabetically by country. Within country sections, institutions are categorized under the following headings: learned societies and professional associations, research institutes and archives, museums and art galleries, and universities and colleges. The book covers every important library giving the number of volumes held and outstanding features of the collection.
