Description

The panorama is primarily a visual medium, but a variety of print matter mediated its viewing; adverts, reviews, handbills and a descriptive programme accompanied by an annotated key to the canvas. The short accounts, programs, reviews, articles and lectures collected here are the primary historical sources left to us. Review 'It would not do justice to this dense publication to describe it as a sourcebook; it is a work of reference. A great deal of original archival research has been carried out by the five editors to furnish this collection of texts promised in its subtitle. This is certainly the most exhaustive account of British Panoramas to date.' Times Literary Supplement 'The set documents primary source materials that are valuable not only to art historians, but also to researchers concerned with history, popular culture, theatre and literature. ...libraries will not regret making this investment.' Art Libraries Journal 'The "raw materials" contained in the six volumes of this edition, together with the wide-ranging and informative headnotes and section introductions, will undoubtedly inspire researchers to continue this valuable work.'
