Architecture reveals, in a tangible, material sense, power. Major architectural projects can reveal a great deal about the power that states have in extracting surplus value of different kinds from city spaces. A critical approach to the role of architecture in society reveals much of the colonisation of culture by politics and the economy and the capacity of the powerful to shape the world materially and symbolically. Architecture also has the potential to be representative and to codify abstract identities. Sociologists and architects could ensure a public function of their work far beyond the boundaries of the academy and the architectural press; meaning that landmark buildings could be considered representative of the communities for whom they purport to be built. However, as Paul Jones outlines in this ground-breaking study, architecture exists in a highly contested context vis-à-vis the construction of collective identities, and is, in some senses, an open discourse that has lost the capacity to represent an order of values or identities in an uncontested way. The Sociology of Architecture is a genuinely interdisciplinary work that will be required reading for both architects and sociologists.
