In the Tale of Vǫlsi, a Norwegian family worships a diabolically animated preserved horse penis, resisting the new Christian religion until King Olaf the Saint intervenes. Traditionally, it has been read as evidence of a pre-Christian fertility cult or dismissed as an obscene trifle. This book takes a new approachby developing the concept of the "paganesque" - the air of an older religious culture inimical to Christianity. It shows how thetaledeploys vernacular genres to create the flavor of an imagined, satirical paganism for a fourteenth-century Icelandic audience. By challenging the notion that the horse penis is the key to understanding the tale, the study allows the artistry and wit of the "Paganesque" to come fully into view.
