Description

Through a detailed examination of contemporary educational methodologies, curricula and practices this book looks at the education of boys and girls of the middling and the upper classes. Subject specific chapters on Latin and geography examine the relations between pedagogies and the competitions between subjects which shaped them. Cohen shows that girls were not excluded from learning a science like geography, but the contemporary perception of the inferiority of their education as opposed to the classical instruction of boys was constructed as part of the classic vs. modern debate.
