The book investigates how four English writers in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries observed and interpreted the legatine adventus ceremonies held to welcome papal legates. The receptions were ostensibly a straightforward display of power, communicating the lordship and authority of the papal legate, but were also susceptible to manipulation and distortion. Drawing on chronicles, customaries, decretals and other sources, the book sheds new light on the interplay between the expectations of the papacy and the response of the writers.
