CABI Electrical Weeding: A Sustainable Alternative to Herbicides

As global agriculture faces mounting challenges from herbicide resistance, environmental degradation, and tightening regulations on chemical weed control, the search for sustainable alternatives has never been more urgent. Electrical Weeding: A Sustainable Alternative to Herbicides presents a groundbreaking, science-driven solution: using electricity to eliminate unwanted plants without the use of chemicals. This comprehensive book explores the principles, development, and application of electrical weed control - an approach that replaces herbicides with targeted high-voltage energy to destroy plant tissues from leaf to root. Drawing on decades of research, technological innovation, and field experience, the book offers a clear and accessible explanation of how electrocution affects plant biology, how electrical parameters influence efficacy, and how systems can be designed and deployed effectively in both agricultural and urban environments. Chapters cover the history of electrical weeding, the biological mechanism of plant death, soil and plant resistance dynamics, electrode configurations, safety protocols, and ecological impacts. The book also includes field trial results, cost comparisons with chemical methods, and a vision for the role of electrical weeding in sustainable farming systems. This book is an essential resource for farmers, researchers, agronomists, policymakers, and environmental advocates seeking viable, chemical-free weed-control strategies.
