Description

About the Book Shenzhen is China's Silicon Valley—home to Huawei, Tencent, DJI, and BYD, and filing more international patents each year than France or the UK. Just across the border from Hong Kong, fifteen minutes by high-speed rail, it has grown from under one million to nearly twenty million people in forty-five years—now twice the size of London or New York. It is one of the most dynamic cities on earth. Yet few in the West have heard of it. What happened? How did China do it? This book is an investigation, somewhat like a detective solving a mystery, into an extraordinary experiment of which the West knows very little. Cambridge anthropologist Alan Macfarlane, drawing on decades of research into the British Industrial Revolution, Japan's rise, and the Asian Tigers, approaches Shenzhen through what he calls "detective analysis"—building hypotheses, tracing chains of causation, then testing them against evidence. But every detective needs partners. His two "Watsons" are Xun Xiaoya, a legal scholar at Shenzhen University, and Qin Yuchen, a writer and translator who has worked with Macfarlane for over a decade. While he brings an outsider's analytical eye, they bring something he could never possess: insider knowledge, cultural fluency, and lived understanding. Together, they interview six witnesses—an urban planner, an AI innovator, a legal scholar, a university president, an architect, and a tech entrepreneur. Each helped build modern Shenzhen; each offers testimony that confirms or challenges their hypotheses. What emerges is something unexpected: not just an industrial powerhouse, but a city that prides itself on culture, libraries, and parks as much as on business. Macfarlane proposes original frameworks to explain this miracle: the "bounded but leaky" system that protected Shenzhen while keeping it open to the world; the "magic triangle" linking discovery, invention, and mass production—a cycle that Cambridge and Silicon Valley only partially complete, but which Shenzhen has closed. Like an embryo shielded by the placenta of the Special Economic Zone, this city grew into something neither wholly Western nor Eastern, but a blend creating something original and new. The mystery is not fully solved. But this book offers new ways of thinking about one of the most improbable experiments of our time. About the Authors Alan Macfarlane is an Emeritus Professor of Anthropological Science at the University of Cambridge, a Life Fellow of King's College Cambridge and a Fellow of the British Academy since 1986. Alan is the author of more than forty books, including The Origins of English Individualism (1978) and Letters to Lily: On How the World Works (2005). He has worked in England, Nepal, Japan and China as both an historian and anthropologist. Xun Xiaoya, Assistant Professor at Shenzhen University, MPhil & PhD graduate from the University of Cambridge. Translator of the books China, Japan, Europe and the Anglo-sphere: A Comparative Analysis and In Two Minds: Shocking True Stories of Murder, Justice and Recovery from a Forensic Psychiatrist. Qin Yuchen, Editor at Cam Rivers Publishing, writer, translator, and artist with a master's degree from the University of Cambridge. Former Editorial Director of Art and Design magazine. Her work includes translating Cosmologies and the Modern World and editing My Journey Eastwards. She is also a painter and runs MUYE, an art studio in a Beijing hutong.
