Im 6. Jhd. v.u.Z. etabliert sich mit dem Zusammenbruch des Neuassyrischen Reiches an vielen Stellen in Nordmesopotamien und dem angrenzenden Zagros-Gebirge eine neue Form des Zusammenlebens: Squattersiedlungen. Einst monumentale Strukturen scheinen ihre Bedeutung als elitare Orte zu verlieren und nun fur hausliche Zwecke genutzt zu werden. In dieser Arbeit, die aus einer Doktorarbeit an der Freien Universitat Berlin hervorgegangen ist, wird diese Form des Zusammenlebens untersucht. In einem qualitativen Vergleich zwischen den Squattersiedlungen der vier Fundorte Tell Sheikh Hamad, Nimrud, Godin Tepe und Nush-i Jan werden in dieser Arbeit Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der Aneignung monumentaler Raume herausgearbeitet. Als theoretische Grundlage, diese Aneignungen zu verstehen, wird die Raumtheorie Lefebvres herangezogen. Methodisch wird die Space-Syntax-Analyse von Hillier und Hanson und der Sequenz-of-Events-Ansatz von Klinkenberg benutzt. Letztlich fuhrt diese Betrachtung dazu, dass Squattersiedlungen nicht einfach provisorische Bleiben waren, die nur einige Jahre existierten, sondern vielmehr etablierte Siedlungen, die uber Jahrhunderte hinweg existierten. Auch stellt sich heraus, dass die Bewohner*innen der Squattersiedlungen besondere Herausforderungen mit der zerfallenden monumentalen Struktur hatten, denen sie mit Kreativitat und Erfindungsgeist begegneten. Squattersiedlungen verdienen daher ihre ganze eigene Betrachtung und sollten als ein kulturelles Phanomen des 6. und 5. Jhd. in Nordmesopotamien und dem zentralen Zagros-Gebirge gesehen werden.
