Göreme and Şahinefendi collects the results of surveys conducted by the Team for Underground Studies in Turkey in these two specific areas of Cappadocia, complemented by documentation produced in collaboration with Ukrainian, French and Turkish researchers. The object was the identification and documentation of underground architecture complementary to the best-known and most substantial Byzantine rock-cut churches. This research, conducted through speleological techniques and archaeometric survey, has allowed, in particular, the discovery of numerous defensive structures, previously completely unknown, and of related underground hydraulic systems. A completely new picture of the areas investigated emerges, in which the liturgical and funerary structures carved into the rocks represent only the tip of a ‘stone iceberg’, that is, the most evident and closest part to the surface of an underground world that has proved to be much more extensive and diverse than previously imagined.|In questo volume sono stati raccolti i risultati delle indagini condotte dal Gruppo Studi Sotterranei per la Turchia su due aree specifiche della Cappadocia, Göreme e Şahinefendi, integrati da documentazione realizzata in collaborazione con ricercatori ucraini, francesi e turchi. Oggetto della attività del Team è stata l’individuazione e la documentazione delle architetture sotterranee complementari alle più conosciute e monumentali chiese rupestri bizantine. Tale ricerca, condotta con tecniche speleologiche e rilievi archeometrici, ha permesso, in particolare, il ritrovamento di numerose strutture a carattere difensivo, prima del tutto sconosciute, e di peculiari sistemi idraulici ipogei funzionali alla loro organizzazione. Ne emerge un quadro del tutto inedito delle aree indagate, in cui le opere ecclesiali e funerarie scavate nelle rocce rappresentano soltanto la punta di un ‘iceberg di pietra’, cioè la parte più evidente e più vicina alla superficie di un mondo sotterraneo che si è rivelato assai più esteso e diversificato di quanto si potesse immaginare.
