As of late 2020, humanity worldwide is faced with enormous challenges (e.g. a pandemic and climate change), but has simultaneously made impressive advances in research and technology. One particularly impressive technological field is that of artificial intelligence (AI). In both of the above and other contexts―i.e., dealing with challenges and in scientific exploration, it is a truism that language and communication are indispensable.But whereas communication, social science, and other disciplines' scholars have invested sufficient research efforts in the general study of language and communication, relatively/comparatively less effort has been invested in the subfield of intrapersonal communication in its own right, versus its study in relation to other topics. As such, the topic (intrapersonal communication) is often related to concepts such as "internal monologue," "dialogical self," and "reflexivity." In this book, Dr. Seif Sekalala focuses exclusively on the concept of intrapersonal communication, explicating on how and why we communicate with our own "selves", and how and why scholars can help humans improve and harness intrapersonal communication in fields such as AI.A significant part of the constitutive knowledge presented in the book is drawn from a variety of social-scientific and other disciplines' work, including sociology, psychiatry, psychology, linguistics, and cognitive science. In addition to the secondary research drawn from the above disciplines, Dr. Sekalala also presents new research findings from an autoethnographic (self-)study of intrapersonal cognition and communication processes, as well as a content-analysis of studies from relevant top journals.
