This book presents a novel study of children's compulsory productive educational labour in modern and modernizing societies under globalization, and the implications for such matters as children's everyday lives, relationships and rights, international legal instruments, relevant analytical notions (including slavery), and sociological analysis. The coercive element of schooling is almost entirely swept under the carpet, but it is certainly perceived as slavery by some children who can't perform as required, especially working class boys, and probably a high proportion of children in care.
