Description

Outmoded notions of universities between the Reformation and Enlightenment would have them as insular and intellectually poor institutions. This book reveals quite the opposite. They were powerful institutions that formed societies, harnessed to legitimise and perpetuate the power of states and archetypes on which idealised societies could be modelled to maintain social order. In Scotland, Ireland and even across the Atlantic, especially in New England, they were seen as institutional bulwarks against external intrusions, promoting localised and competing visions of church and state, becoming battle grounds of the mid-seventeenth-century's intellectual, political, and religious conflicts.
