At the same time that the House Committee on UN-American Activities was investigating communists in the film industry, vibrant, defiantly political films were being independently produced. Though much has been written on the politics of Hollywood in the period of the blacklist, the political filmmaking in that era has largely been overlooked - until now. Hollywood Riots explores the significant influence that violent race riots in Los Angeles and union strikes in the film industry had on American filmmaking. Doug Dibbern reveals how the movies produced by progressives in the late 1940s and early 1950s recast political events from California's recent past as politically-engaged narratives that were inflected with their own fears of persecution.
