Description

Biological data sets are often multivariate in nature with many different attributes measured on each observational unit. Ordination is a general statistical method of revealing this multivariate nature in only a few dimensions (unconstrained ordination) or of testing hypotheses concerning such multivariate patterns (constrained ordination). This book presents the most common ordination methods (principal components analysis, correspondence analysis, principal coordinates analysis and multidimensional scaling), explains how they work, how to perform these analysis using the R environment and using real biological data sets, and how to interpret the results. This book is written for upper-level undergraduates or graduate students in biology, does not assume any previous training in mathematics and only assumes an introductory training in basic statistical concepts.
