Description

On 12 June 1991, Mount Pinatubo “TUBO” erupted in the second-largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century—eight times more powerful than Mount St. Helens. The disaster killed hundreds, destroyed Clark Air Base, and triggered one of the largest peacetime military evacuations in U.S. military history. Marine Reserve helicopter squadron HML-776, originally deployed for Desert Shield/Storm, was redirected to NAS Cubi Point near the eruption zone. Under Operation Fiery Vigil, they flew daring rescue and relief missions for months, returning home in October 1991—only to face a quieter but more enduring blow from which they would not recover. Decades later, in 2014, the Philippine government honored HML-776 with the Military Civic Action Medal for their humanitarian service—recognition long overlooked by U.S. leadership. This book reveals the untold story of their heroism and the quiet bias that obscured it. Now, as the Navy and Marine Corps return to the Philippines, the story of HML-776 resonates again.
