Bolt cutters don't open every padlock, boots can't kick in every door, and there is a time and a place for a method of entry that is effective, efficient, and reasonable. Locked out of your car? Smashing the windows might be unreasonable. Locked out of a large set of double-swinging steel doors that you're unable to kick open? Maybe a coat hanger or a pocket knife is a fast and effective solution. Just knowing how to use a lock picking set is a good start, just knowing how to perform a bypass on a lock is a good start too.
