Description
The new moon has long been a matter of religion. The Sanhedrin, the Pontiff, and the Mufti traditionally announce the first day of a lunation. This is the first light from the crescent moon which determines the new lunar month. This book establishes the Universal Time and the geographic location of first visibility using concepts of astronomy, photometry and radiometry. In addition to to the New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter phases, a 5th lunar phase is therefore proposed for unifying religious and social lunar-based celebrations around the world. The development results in a precise Jewish calendar, a precise dating of the crucifixion event, and a centurial calendar for the month of Ramadan. The Hejri calendar is evaluated in light of the historical events associated with the emergence of Islam.
