THE STEWARDSHIP OF EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT is a home study course for senior and middle management leadership development. Management development program for senior management personnel. USS WARREN LYNN CARD (DE 383) is a fictitious ship. The model for the ship used in this work was modeled after a Cannon-class destroyer escort built for the United States Navy during World War II. The officers and crew are also fictitious. The events depicted in the case study are based on real events. They actually occurred, but in different organizations at different times. Captain Mills and Lieutenant Winthrop are composite characters based on four senior executives with whom I have worked. The methods used to handle the described situations were the actual methods used by these experienced top managers. The other officers and crew mentioned are also composite characters. Why a ship? A ship is an excellent composite organization. Like a self-contained ship at sea, organizations reach their objective, or fail, depending on how the combined technical and interpersonal skills of its people are utilized. The story of the ship is simply the framework around which the workshop was constructed. Why a U.S. Naval Reserve Force Ship? The military provides a clearly defined operational organization and unity of command. The members of such an organization could be less homogeneous; I could ascribe to them a wider variety of motives, intensity and involvement for the purposes of analysis and discussion.Quite some time back, the Department of Defense decided that reserve units should be able to join the active duty forces without delays for extensive upgrading and training. Consequently, both the Captain and the Executive Officer are now on full-time active duty rather than participating in the management of the ship only on weekends or other occasions. The workshop (and story) didn’t work as well as the new way, so the former arrangement was used.The selected content by no means covers all areas of leadership and management. While we can isolate the various elements that make up leadership and management such as planning, organizing, directing, controlling, discipline and morale, etc., etc., they are all fingers on the same hand, and must all work together if effective managerial activity is to take place.The factors examined in this work are timeless. Human nature does not change as the centuries go by, thus the management of human beings does not change as well. The story takes place in the early 1970’s.
